De Helfterkamp’s Story
Originally the Helfterkamp was part of the estate of Castle Cannenburgh. During WWII the Germans took possession of the estate and leased plots of the land. After the war the estate became government property. They enabled the tenants to buy plots of land. At that time the plot was referred to as ‘De Hester’. Once it was fenced off it became known as ‘De Hesterkamp’. A spelling error in the land registry turned it into ‘Helfterkamp’. Although it might not have been a mistake. After all, ‘hester’ is another word for a young sow! In 2012 Bart and Kirsten became the proud owners of De Helfterkamp. They moved their family from the south of Holland to Vaassen in the Veluwe, to embark on a new hospitality venture and start the next chapter of the Helfterkamp’s story.
